We are a light-commercial HVAC company, which means we work on HVAC systems 25 tons and under. You might wonder what “25 tons” means. It doesn’t have anything to do with the weight of the HVAC unit in question, but refers to how much heating/cooling power it has. To give you a sense of the range, most residential HVAC systems are from 1 to 5 tons. Light commercial systems may also be in this range, but most businesses will have HVAC units from 6 to 25 tons.
How many tons of cooling does your business need to make it through the summer? Finding the answer to that question is one of the most important parts of our commercial air conditioning services in Everett, WA. When you work with us for a new AC system installation, we’ll carefully size the unit so it delivers the right amount of cooling for your day-to-day operating requirements.
What are tons in HVAC? People are sometimes confused when they hear us refer to tons when talking about their cooling, or the tonnage of a system. The simple answer is that a ton of cooling means that an AC system can remove 12,000 BTUs (British Thermal Units) of heat from a space per hour. This is the amount of heat needed to melt one ton of ice—and that’s where the name comes from. Tons is also used for heating systems, except the system outputs 12,000 BTUs rather than removes it.
Finding the Right Tonnage
How do we know the tons of cooling necessary for your building? Through a process called sizing. We make a calculation based on numerous factors about your business—it’s size, the amount of heat produced by equipment and people in it, the insulation, the windows and their light exposure, and more—and are able to find the required tonnage for a new AC system.
Oversized Air Conditioners
You might be thinking that it would be better to err on the side of too much cooling, just in case. But an oversized commercial AC is just as bad as an undersized one. An oversized air conditioning system will waste power because it will constantly shut off early and then turn back on, a situation called short-cycling. Not only does this drain power and put extra strain on the system, it prevents the AC from distributing cooling evenly around a building. Unfortunately, amateur installers often make the mistake of installing oversized ACs. This is one of the many reasons to only trust licensed commercial professionals.
